 Dare!!??? As in double dog dare!!?? As in triple dog dare with a cherry on top!!?? ( Don't get your bowels in an uproar, I'm only teasing!!:D )
    I'm not upset :)

I just find it really strange for people to defend questionable actions of large companies!

    ???

    Get your facts straight

This is the carriers messing people over, not Google.

Google added wireless hotspot feature to all Android 2.2 (Froyo) devices last year (and Apple included a similar feature in to the iPhone 4 with IOS 4 AFAIK).

Actually, To be precise...this is the carrier enforcing the contract you made with them. You did sign a contract, right?

How much plainer does it need to be, their whole intent is to enable people to steal the GUI and enjoy the Apple OS X experience for free.

How do you figure? There are people like me that hate Intel's products but love Apple's. So I really don't want to buy an Intel Mac. I would much rather build an AMD rig and buy OSX and install on that. I have bought all OS X releases since 10.2 and would proudly buy 10.5 and run on non-Apple hardware.

I'd imagine there are many like me that would rather not use Apple hardware but would gladly buy OS X to run on their computers.

what sucks is that academic ve4rsions are not allowed this free update.Where did you read that?

Academic versions aren't eligible for the next upgrade, but this isn't an upgrade. This is an update.

I think it's another great photoshop using the iPad as the source. I'm hoping for a better camera with flash in the next iPhone. I wouldn't like the square edges and I don't think Apple will give that up. The text is slanted wrong on the third image, the post with a real iPhone a few back doesn't disprove this. The text looks slanted normal on this one. If you duplicate the original image angle and distance more perfectly it would be more obvious.

But what do I care? I'm going to go with a Sprint 4G phone in June anyways.

Technically my POWERMAC G4 can run iMovie, Keynote, and other mac software. RUNNING and FUNCTIONING (at a reasonable speed) are two totally different things. iPhoto takes a day to get going. I can't imagine aperture.

Anyway... I don't want to ruin anybody's happy day, but the reality is, if you don't have the latest and greatest Apple Machine, the current software runs pretty slow.

Go to the Apple store (yes, this means some of you will have to leave your apartment) and try running this software on a mac mini. Don't get depressed when it takes your entire lunch break to start the software. Forget about moving stacks of photos around and editing. As I mentioned... I had problems with the G5 QUAD and the original aperture at my Apple Store in Seattle.

    Just a thought.

I wouldn't get too excited about Aperture running on 'lighter' hardware such as MacBooks or Mac minis. I think the idea is that, rather than doing hardcore raw file processing on these lightweight hardware products, you'd just have your JPEG-preview-only Aperture library on these machines. So the really speedy functionality on this lightweight hardware would be limited to organizing, sorting, searching, slideshows, etc. of pre-generated JPEG previews.

I doubt we'll be doing hardcore bulk raw processing on a Mac mini, even with Aperture 1.5. But I wouldn't mind if we could.

Respectfully, I think you're missing the point. In its totality, installing an app is more like:

    1) Google or otherwise search for an app. Make sure its the Mac version, compatible with your OS version, processor, etc. There probably won't be any reviews, more like select quotes from people who liked it.
    2) IF you trust that website, fill out your credit card information, PayPal account, etc.
    3) Download it and do the process you described for installing.
    4) If you need to re-install the app, buy a new computer, etc. hope that the company allows you to re-download it.
    5) If you have a good/bad experience, good luck reviewing it or rating it.

I'm a pretty tech-savvy guy and I still appreciate the ease of the Mac App Store.

Yet, inexplicably, we made due without a walled garden for decades.

    1) Wow, you will have to do some research. There might even be some reading involved. Also, since OS 10.6.6 + is the only OS that will run the store, its pretty easy to ensure compatibility.

    2) Most apps I use are free (not stolen), so payment does not factor in unless I doneate via PayPal. Also, since Apple is taking a pretty large slice of the revenue, at some point this will have to be passed on to the consumers

    3) A file on a thumb drive is easier to pass along than download a file from the internet via the Mac App store.

    4) Or you could store the file on your hard drive or a NAS, or a cheap external drive. Noting says you have to re-download it.

    5) So I guess that sites like MacUpdate are not useful? There are plenty of review sites for OS X apps.

Its not a bad concept - if its voluntary. However, to make it a rule to compete in the Design Award is lame. As others have said, it should be renamed the MacStore App Award to reflect the narrowing of the field they are doing by only allowing App Store devs to compete.

I don't know of many people who buy a 500 iPhone outright. Most (Especially in the UK) will be on a 18-24 month contract.

If you buy it outright for 500 then it's your device with no contract. When you buy it outright it's up to you to buy a SIM and find a plan.

I run my iPhone 4 on O2's Unlimited PAYG plan, giving me free & unlimited calls and texts to other O2 users (my entire family and all friends bar one are on O2), for 15 per month. I added the web bolt on for 10 per month, which means for every 15 I top up, O2 take 10 off for my 500mb web access bolt on.

So, for 15 a month I get free calls and texts to everyone I know and 500mb of 3G internet. And best of all, I can change whenever I like because the phone is unlocked and SIM free right out the box.

So, on the left side of the above linked page it says they're $120 and on the right side of the same page it says they're $140! So, which is it?Shipping is $20 on the right side they have all ready added it in. on the white set it says $120 on left and right, but if you notice it also says for local pick up. It's only when you hit the shipping tab that you can set it from local pick up to UPS ground. After that, both the white set and the black set are $140 after shipping. No Tax.

I noticed on an aforementioned wikipedia page that Samba was removed...

Does this mean I cannot connect to a linux server via smb:// ???
Not everything is a windows workgroup... :(
I mean I guess it's not a huge deal since I can ssh in, but I liked mounting it as a volume from finder.

Cool screw the artist! That's taken care of through an intricate web of taxes, duties and fees. So all music borrowed on the library can be copied and/or ripped legally by the lender (though the Library can not copy it for you), and I can even make copies for my "closest friends and relatives" of all music and movies (but not software) that I borrow, rent or buy. It's very good to be a consumer in Norway... most of the time... ;)

Apple Apple Apple... or should I say Steve Steve Steve...

What you are doing right now is what a psychologist would call "diverting." You are simply trying to take away the focus of your own iPhone 4's faults and place everyone's attention on other brands that we do not care about. You admitted you screwed up (congratulations, that is a great first step). Now it is time to take another baby step and fix the problem... your problem... the iPhone 4.

If this is the case then everyone should be complaining to every single cell phone manufacturer and demand a recall from them too. I don't hear or see that, though.

Because it is not material to my point.... In the slightest....

Another analogy: "I am a basketball player. A regulation basketball weighs 96 pounds. I am right, because I am a basketball player and you are not."

    Silly? Yes.

Wow. It's clear you have no intention of learning anything. You just want to be right. Nice.

I am leaning towards a new iPod product before the end of the year for two reasons:

    1) Zune is being release, Apple needs to steal the limelight here.
    2) The last iPod update was a huge deal for the Nano and a non-event for the 5G iPod.
    Thats a good call!

As a sinister lefty, I take umbrage in the comparison of persecution of homosexuals and that of left handed people. We are looking at orders of magnitude difference, particularly in the last 2 millennia.

    yes, I hope it's true.
I have the gut feeling that Apple is holding off until end of October to:
    • first, sell as many ipods as they can
    • wait for the Zune
    • have a special event for the Video ipod
    • have momentum for the Xmas season

I look forward a 120gig drive nd a way to input data on the road ala PDA. that would be very nice.

As for ThinkSecret, who cares what they say. Like macrumors says they go back and forth because they just have no clue and if this indeed happen or not they will say they were right. What a joke.
Right now the most reliable site is Appleinsider.

Man, that is a crummy little house...
    Humm?

...by Silicon Valley standards if I ever saw one. I live in the neighboring town (Portola Valley), which is essentially the same as Woodside, and hence know many homes in the area (including the one I live in).
You're qualified to make this statement because you're rich! Awesome credentials!

And by current standards around here, not having a private bathroom for EACH bedroom, and a LARGE closet, is pretty substandard. Also, to only have *1* walk-in in the master rather than 2 is not good. No home theater? Large gym with panoramic views? Sauna/steam room/? Sun room? Library? Detached guest suite or guest house (in-law/nanny quarters, etc.)? Swimming pool? Hot tub? This honestly doesn't look like a place where a man of his caliber would be living full-time. Of course his house in Palo Alto isn't huge, either, but at least it is charming, historic, enchanted.
    Value judgement.

He has a number of kids, so I'm not sure how they would all fit into this small space with their friends when, e.g., everyone comes home for summers, holidays, etc. Typical houses for higher level people in the Woodside area would have at least 6-7 bedrooms, a bathroom for each bedroom, plus several additional half bathrooms, and probably about 10,000 squ. ft."Higher level people?" Who are you? Does above average wealth make them more deserving or special or some robotic superhuman that immediately "needs" more of everything? Some "higher level people" aren't elitist consumers like you seem to think.

Only thing that makes sense to me is that he would view this as his retirement house since it'll only be done ~5 years, anyway. And I suppose for retirement people like to keep it small and simple. That would make sense to me and might hint at when he might be planning on retiring.
    Ahhh. I see.
