The city council of Aberdeen, Wash., also known as the birthplace of Kurt Cobain, yesterday rejected a resolution that would have renamed the northern city of Aberdeen after the bridge singer of Nirvana. In fact, they voted against it aggressively, at a rate of 1.10 is officially put to vote against the name of Cobain on the bridge, which was submitted to the closing track Nevermind "Something in the way." Rejecting the resolution, argued that citizens, substance abuse, suicide and a low opinion of the city "of Cobain's no reason not to spend the bridge in his name.
For decades, the North Aberdeen Bridge was informally called the Young Street Bridge, and Young Street itself was named after the pioneer Alexander Young, but the board also voted to rename the bridge after Young officially. As a consolation, however, the council agreed to name the piece of land where some of Cobain's ashes were scattered in the Wishkah River, "Kurt Cobain Memorial landing." "You want to call Landing Memorial is good, but leave the bridge alone," Aberdeen resident Tori Kovach said with enthusiasm.
Aberdeen is already heavily marked by references to Cobain and his legacy, so understandable that they did not name the bridge after him too. Road sign welcoming visitors (who are likely, people who want to see the hometown of Kurt Cobain) reads: "Welcome to Aberdeen - Come As You Are", a nod only Nevermind. Aberdeen were also erected a giant sculpture of an electric guitar in a park nearby, and the controversial board near the bridge above, which shows some of the most notorious quotes Cobain as "Drugs are bad for you, they f --- you." Indeed.
You can see why Aberdeen will be reluctant to yield to rename the bridge after Cobain, even if it is the bridge that inspired "Something in the way." The bridge was a turning point.
