Don Cornelius Commits Suicide

Don Cornelius Commits Suicide: Don Cornelius, the creator of the iconic Soul Train dance program, which helped introduce American black culture on television, has died after a shot in the head, officials said Wednesday. He was 75.

"The death is reported as a suicide, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," said Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter. Cornelius was pronounced dead at 4: 56 pm, Winter said.

Police found the body of a popular figure in his home after responding to reports of shooting in the rich region of hills called the Sherman Oaks Los Angeles, where he lived. The community is home to many celebrities and entertainment executives.

Cornelius was taken to a nearby hospital where he was officially pronounced dead, police spokesman in Los Angeles, Kevin Maiberg said. He declined to give details because detectives were still investigating the scene Wednesday morning.

Cornelius, Soul Train began in the early 1970's local dance show in Chicago. He moved to Los Angeles the following year and eventually became part of the history of pop culture by increasing the careers of young performers to burst, as the Jackson Five, and artists like James Brown, who was trying to connect to the young and funky. As a guest of the smooth talking in a low voice, Corneille gave a hip young children 70 years old, the creator of Dick Clark American Estrada offered to viewers in the early days of rock 'n' roll.

As the popularity of Soul Train has grown, the show began to go to America and old R & B artists from the expanded base of the fan. Soul Train released until 2006, making the series longer than the U.S. first run syndication. Cornelius sold the franchise in 2008.

Rev. longtime friend Al Sharpton has expressed shock and sadness the news of his death.

"He brought soul music and dance in the world so that he has never been demonstrated, and it was a game changer in the world culture," he said. Quincy Jones said he was "deeply saddened" by the sudden death of his friend, colleague and business partner.

"Before MTV, was Soul Train, which will be the great legacy of Don Cornelius," he said. "His contribution to the television, music and culture as a whole will never adapt."

- Music artists appear on the show ranged from Marvin Gaye, James Brown and the Jackson 5 and Elton John, David Bowie and Paula Abdul.

- With deep soft voice, Cornelius closed the show each week with the phrase: "And you can bet your last money, it will be a stone gas, honey, I'm Don Cornelius, and as always we have the farewell and wish you love, peace and soul! "

- Soul Train Music Awards were established in 1987 and are broadcast each year on the channel BET.
